Every field must have its own abbreviations. For example, the ISBN (International Standard Book Number) is on the back of a book; a trucker going from Los Angeles to Phoenix, Tucson, El Paso and San Antonio might note her route as LA/PHX/TUC/EP/SA; a baseball coach might use P, C, 1B, 2B, 3B, SS, LF, CF, RF for pitcher, catcher, first base, second base, third base, shortstop, left field, center field, right field.
