Puzzle of the Day

Every field must have its own abbreviations. For example, the ISBN (International Standard Book Number) is on the back of a book; a trucker going from Los Angeles to Phoenix, Tucson, El Paso and San Antonio might note her route as LA/PHX/TUC/EP/SA; a baseball coach might use P, C, 1B, 2B, 3B, SS, LF, CF, RF for pitcher, catcher, first base, second base, third base, shortstop, left field, center field, right field. What do the following lists of abbreviations mean?

1. ARI, ALG, GEO, TRI, PRO, STA, CAL
2. COM, DRA, ADV, ACT, SPO, MUS, HOR, SCI
3. VLN, VLA, CEL, BA, TRU, TRO, FH
4. SON, SAM, MIT, GOL, TOS, PAN, ZEN, QUA
5. CEL, KNI, BUL, ROC, CAV, JAZ, LAK
6. LGA, LAX, SFO, DAL, SEA, MIA, DET
7. YOS, YEL, OLY, GLA, CAR, MAM, EVE, SHE
8. FIR, GDY, DUN, GDR, MIC, KEL, UNI
